My journey started here in Zimbabwe, at the Falls, with stops in Botswana, Namibia and ending in Cape Town, South Africa.
Visiting Victoria Falls has been one of my childhood dreams. Even though we lived in Transvaal and not far away from, then, Southern Rhodesia, it has eluded me all my life. My attempts to see her, throughout the years, had been thwarted by political unrest, elections or the wrong time of the year.
Straddling the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the spray of the Falls can be seen for miles away and I was in awe at the first sight of her.
It left me overwhelmed with gratitude as I spent the morning walking along the narrow pathways on the Zimbabwe side and tried to capture its beauty on camera.
With the help of the spray, I photographed some bright and crisp rainbows and got lightly soaked in the process.
While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfalls in the world, it is classified as the largest, based on its width of 1708 metres (5,604 ft) and height of 108 metres (354 ft) resulting in the world’s largest sheet of falling water. The original name is Mosi-oa-Tunya, the “the smoke that thunders”.
After spending the morning at the falls, I returned later that afternoon for a helicopter ride over the area to get a better view of its magnitude. I was not disappointed.
