With the Dutch settlers in the Cape, they brought along their passion for flowers.
They were not disappointed finding the Protea and they called it Suikerbos, or Sugarbush.
It also became a form of endearment by calling someone your Suikerbos and there are songs written about it.The King Protea is the largest with a full head. It is also the national flower of South Africa. Even dried they make a beautiful bouquet.
The flower market on Adderley Street, in the heart of the city and is as colourful as its vendors. They typically are of Malay origin but speak Afrikaans and have been on the market for over 100 years.
The pastel shades vary from soft pink to coral and mauve with several shades in between.
The market has delectable scents and unusual colours.
